Guttering has one job: collect everything the roof sheds and move it away from the building. When it stops doing that, water does not simply disappear; it runs down the wall, soaks the brickwork, saturates the ground at the foundations and finds its way behind fascias and into roof timbers.

What happens if it waits
Overflowing gutters do not stay a gutter problem for long
A blocked gutter is a very small fault with a long reach. Water that cannot get to the downpipe goes over the front edge or backs up behind the fascia. Both routes end in timber (the fascia board, the roof edge, the ends of the rafters) and wet timber rots.
Down at ground level, the same water lands hard against the wall and soaks into the base of the brickwork. Over a wet winter that produces damp inside, spoiled decoration and, where the ground stays saturated, problems around the foundations and paths that never dry out.
Standing water in a gutter is also where moss and vegetation take root, and full gutters get heavy. Weight pulls brackets out of the fascia, the run drops, and once the fall reverses the gutter holds water permanently rather than moving it. A cheap clear-out becomes a full replacement.
The frustrating part is how avoidable it all is. Clearing and adjusting guttering is one of the least expensive things anyone can do to a house. Replastering a wall, replacing rotten fascias and roof timber, and treating damp are not.
Common mistakes we get called out to fix
- Sealing a leaking joint from below with mastic, which fails in one season because the joint moves and was never the underlying issue.
- Replacing a gutter run while leaving the brackets and falls exactly as they were, so it holds water just like the old one.
- Clearing the gutter but not the outlet or downpipe, so the blockage simply moves and the run fills again in the next storm.
- Fixing new guttering to fascia boards that are already soft, giving the brackets nothing solid to hold on to.
- Leaving moss on the roof above, which then washes straight back down into the newly cleared gutter.
- Ignoring a downpipe that is too small or discharging badly, so the system was always going to overflow at the same point.

Clearing, repairs, replacement and the details that decide whether it works
Guttering covers three distinct pieces of work, and knowing which one your house needs is most of the value. Here is what each involves and what we look at.
Gutter clearing
Clearing means removing leaves, moss, grit and vegetation from the full run, then flushing the gutter and the downpipes so the water route is proven clear rather than assumed clear.
Outlets and the tops of downpipes matter as much as the gutter itself. A silted outlet holds the whole run back even when the gutter looks clean from the ground.
Properties under trees, and roofs with moss on them, will need this periodically. It is straightforward maintenance and it keeps everything else from becoming necessary.
Repairs
Common repairs are re-fixing or replacing brackets, resetting a run to a correct fall, replacing failed joints and unions, refitting a downpipe and repairing the section under a valley or a flat roof outlet where flow is heaviest.
Where the plastic is still sound and the fascia is solid, a repair is real value and it will hold. We would rather do that than sell a full run nobody needs.
Where brittle, cracked or badly faded plastic is failing at multiple points, we will say plainly that repairs will keep coming back and replacement is the cheaper route over time.
Supply and full replacement
A replacement covers the gutters, unions, outlets, brackets, downpipes, shoes and any hoppers, set out so the roof drains to the right points instead of the points the old system happened to use.
Brackets are fixed to sound timber at proper centres, with the fall set deliberately along the run. This is what stops a new gutter behaving exactly like the old one.
Because rotten fascia and soffit boards give brackets nothing to hold, uPVC fascias and soffits are often replaced at the same time; one set-up, one visit, and the new guttering has something solid behind it.
Where guttering meets the rest of the roof
Valleys and flat roof outlets concentrate a large area of roof into one short length of gutter, so that section carries far more than the rest of the run and is where overflows usually start.
Moss removal on the roof above stops the gutter being refilled from directly overhead, and it is why we often do both together.
Where a leak has already gone behind the boards, the roof edge, felt and battens can need attention too. We look at the whole edge rather than the gutter in isolation.

How much does gutter clearing or replacement cost in Surrey?

How long does the work take?
Clearing a domestic property is usually a single short visit. Repairs are typically the same. A full replacement around a house is normally a day or so, and you will be given the expected timescale before it is booked in.

How often should gutters be cleared?
It depends entirely on what is above them. A house with mature trees close by or moss on the roof will need it more often than an open-aspect property. Late autumn, once the leaves are down, is the usual point to have it done.

Can you just repair my gutter rather than replace it?
Yes, where the plastic and the fascia behind it are sound. If the material is brittle and leaking at several points, we will tell you honestly that repairs will keep returning.
My gutter overflows but looks clear: why?
Usually the fall is wrong or a bracket has dropped, so water sits in a low spot instead of running to the outlet. It can also be a silted outlet or downpipe below the visible gutter, or a valley discharging more water into one section than it can carry.
Do you handle urgent gutter problems?
